I Have Arrived in Lima Safe and Sound

October 23, 2006

Hola! Greetings from Lima, Peru! Excuse the short post, but the keyboards on computers here all appear to be quite different from ours in the States, so I cannot seem to find all the characters — some simply don’t seem to exist anymore.

All is well. I have just returned from dinner at a nice restaurant here in the Miraflores district where I am staying at the Flying Dog Backpackers Hostel. Dinner consisted of a pancake-like omelette with potato and onions — very tasty. Even got to try the famous Pisco Sour drink! It’s a strong one. We had ice cream for desert. I say “we” because I have been walking around all day with another Southern Californian from Long Beach, Gary Malloy, whom I met on my flight from Panama City into Lima this morning. It’s been great walking around Lima’s “safest” district with someone for the day. We are doing a city tour tomorrow morning. Then, I will be heading off on a bus to Nazca tomorrow afternoon.

My flights went very well on Copa Air. They are the FIRST airline to get ALL my vegetarian meals right. Congratulations, Copa! My luggage arrived at the same time I did… which was very nice indeed. The driver who came to pick me up at the airport was waiting patiently for me at the airport exit. He took Gary and me to our hostal and we settled in there this afternoon.

Lima is a hustling, bustling town. Rather congested and you can feel a bit of the pollution in the air. I have really only explored the Miraflores area so far. There is a park just across from our hostal and several restaurants, internets cafes, and shops all around the area.

So, this is just to let you know — so far, so good! Mum, please kiss and hug the kitties for me! I miss them and you very much already. I will write more from the road as I go. I am exhausted (could not really sleep on the plane) and someone is waiting to use the FREE internet here at the hostal. So, I must go for now. Feel free to forward this to anyone you know who may be interested in receiving my update.

Love and peace, Laurel
